Papa's Pizza Oven Review – Amherst, NY
score
Papa's Pizza Oven on Niagara Falls Boulevard is in Amherst, though across the street would be Tonawanda. Joe has liked their other locations, and the owners messaged him a few times to try this one.
The order
Joe ordered a large 16-inch cheese pepperoni for $30.44. He thought he got the traditional sauce, but found out later it was the mixed sauce, half sweet and half traditional. They were slammed because it was a Bills Sunday.
First bite
Nice, saucy and cheesy, with a mouthful of pepperoni. It tasted a little sweet, which is why Joe suspected the mix.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: The cut needed a little help.
- Sauce: A little sweet. Joe says the more he comes to Buffalo, the more he likes sweeter sauces.
- Pepperoni: Hand cut. Joe says places that don't hand cut are making a mistake.
The traditional sauce
Joe went back for the same large 16-inch cheese pepperoni at $30.44, this time with the traditional sauce for sure. The ratios are money, it's medium thickness and it was cooked nicely with good browning. He could taste more tomato and less sweet. It's good, but Joe likes the mixed sauce better.
Traditional sauce with sausage
On a third visit Joe tried a large 16-inch with traditional sauce and sausage at $30.44, tavern cut into squares. The sausage tastes like a cross between Italian and breakfast sausage, maybe with a little fennel. Joe usually avoids sausage because so many places use a bad one, but this one is good. They told him it's cooked on a pan. He thinks he'd like it even more with the mixed sauce.
The verdict
Joe really likes Papa's, and he gave the mixed sauce cheese pepperoni an 8.6.
Ranking note: Best Pizza Buffalo ranks every pizzeria by Joe’s score for a standard pizza, so Papa's Pizza Oven is listed at 8.6.
