Sugo's Pizzeria is on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga.
The order
Joe ordered a large 16-inch cheese pepperoni for $24.87. It came with cup and char pepperoni, a nice charred outer crust and some magic sprinkling on top.
First bite
The cups were full of sauce and cheese. Delicious, delicious, delicious. The magic dust reminded Joe of Picasso's.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Medium thickness. It tastes fresh, like it was proofed well and baked at the right temperature. Joe ended up with a real appreciation for it.
- Sauce: Joe thinks he tasted a hint of garlic.
- Cheese: Great with the sauce.
- Topping: Joe guesses the magic dust is pre-shredded parm, oregano, salt and some other flavoring.
What would make it better
Maybe push the toppings to the edge.
The heart-shaped Polish pizza
Joe saw on the website that Sugo's does heart-shaped pizzas. When he called in, he was told the Polish pizza was the one. The large 16-inch, done in a deck oven, was $33.91. It has sauerkraut, Polish sausage, onion, mushroom, cheese and a cream sauce on a thicker crust, and Joe said it has Dyngus Day vibes. He absolutely loved the Polish sausage and the thick crust. The cream sauce just didn't do it for him, and it held the pie in neutral. With a different sauce, it could flirt with the nines.
The verdict
It's a fantastic zaza. Joe loves the cheese, pepperoni and sauce, but the crust won him over. He gave it an 8.7.
