Pizza Amore in North Tonawanda does wood-fired pizza, but Joe says the one he got felt heavier than any wood-fired pizza he's held.
The order
Joe ordered a 16-inch wood-fired cheese pepperoni for $25.38. They're not shy with the cup and char, and the grease was drooling down when he tilted the box.
First bite
A huge cheese pull, and Joe lost most of his topping on it. He called it Buffalo meets wood-fired, and said he'd been wondering when he'd find one of these.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Charring underneath like a wood-fired pizza, but it doesn't look or weigh like one on top. Two worlds collide.
- Sauce: Nice and saucy.
- Cheese: Fantastic.
- Pepperoni: Fantastic cup and char, and the distribution is money.
What would make it better
Joe isn't sure anything would make it better. Maybe some basil or some hot honey.
The Detroit style
Joe went back for their Detroit style cheese pepperoni at $25.92. It's heavy, with sauce on top, shredded parm and some herbs, cut into eight slices that could feed three people. The crust is thick, floofy and chewy with nice browning, and it has a cheese crown. Joe has had better Detroit styles in Buffalo, and he found it just slightly light on seasoning and saltiness. Still a solid Detroit style for the price.
The award-winning chicken wing pizza
On a third visit Joe tried their 16-inch award-winning chicken wing pizza at $25.93. It's wood-fired, with what tastes like buffalo chicken wing dip under the cheese, shredded chicken, Frank's Red Hot and blue cheese. Joe said it tastes like a football party dip on a pizza. It's solid, but it doesn't match the best chicken wing pizza he's ever had, made with real wing meat. He'd serve it with sliced celery and extra blue cheese on the side.
The verdict
Joe isn't used to this style, but he likes it a lot. He gave the wood-fired cheese pepperoni an 8.7.
