Papa's Pizza Oven is on Abbott Road in Buffalo, in the spot that used to be Abbott Pizza. When Joe ordered, they asked if he wanted regular or sweet sauce, so he did both.
The order
Joe ordered a large 16-inch cheese pepperoni with regular sauce for $26.98. It came hot out of the deck oven with sauce and cheese going right to the edges and cup and char pepperoni. Joe compared the style to Imperial.
First bite
Nice brown, greasy-looking cook underneath. Joe could taste the tomatoes in the sauce, which he loves, and the cheese was hot and super cheesy.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Just on the cusp of a thin crust, with good flavor. A little sloppy.
- Sauce: You can taste the tomatoes.
- Cheese: Joe loved it and guessed it might be Galbani. The frico on the edge was his favorite bite by far.
- Pepperoni: Cup and char. A little thick, with good flavor. Distribution is money.
What would make it better
Joe wasn't sure whether a little more cook would make it better.
Going back for the sweet sauce
Joe went back the next day for the same large 16-inch cheese pepperoni with the sweet sauce, for $26.96. The pizza was bursting at the box seams, the cup and char looked hand cut and the frico was beautiful. This one was cooked a little less than the first. You can definitely taste the difference in the sweet sauce, and Joe wondered if it's white or brown sugar. It's good, but for him a little too much. The cheese is amazing, and the crust is flirting with medium thickness while still thin. Joe said that frico bite could be his screen saver. He also heard you can order half and half.
The verdict
Joe loves this style of pizza and gave the regular sauce an 8.8. The sweet sauce version got an 8.6. His advice: skip the sweet sauce. Papa's has other locations, and Joe can't wait to try them.
