Papa Leo's Pizzeria sits at Five Corners in Wheatfield, on the edge of Niagara Falls. Joe brought his American buddy Sweatpants Joe, who has been coming here since 1988.
The order
Joe ordered a large 16-inch cheese pepperoni done in a deck oven for $22.01. On the phone, Papa Leo's asked if he wanted sweet sauce or traditional, and traditional pepperoni or cup and char. Joe went with what they recommended, sweet sauce and cup and char, and gave them props for offering the options.
First bite
It's sweet, really sweet, but Joe didn't find it too sweet. Light browning underneath.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: About a medium thickness. Thicker than usual for Niagara Falls, though not as thick as Buffalo. The back crust is really nice.
- Sauce: Sweet and plentiful. Usually sweet sauce is too much for Joe, but this one isn't overboard.
- Cheese: Good. Joe could use just a touch more.
- Pepperoni: Cup and char with nice distribution.
What would make it better
A little more cook underneath. Joe would also like to come back and compare it to the traditional sauce. Sweatpants Joe suggested a little butter on the crust.
The verdict
Sweatpants Joe gave it an 8.2. Joe liked it a lot and went with an 8.3.
