Mattina's Pizzeria Review – Williamsville, NY
score
Mattina's Pizzeria is on Sheridan Drive in Williamsville. Joe brought along a special guest for this one, pizza expert Jay Langfelder, who called it one of his favorite pizzas in town.
The order
They ordered an 18-inch large cheese pepperoni for $28.38. It's done in old school pans with sauce and cheese right to the edge, cup and char pepperoni and a heavy dose of oregano.
First bite
Jay called it quintessential Buffalo style. Joe said it was delicious from the first bite.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: The outside edge has frico, which Jay explained means fried cheese. Here there's a little tomato in it too. Joe called it the shining star.
- Sauce: A concentrated, sweet tomato flavor that Buffalo is known for. A little on the pasty side, but not crazy sweet.
- Cheese: Jay thinks it's whole milk mozzarella, probably shredded in house, judging by the creaminess. Joe said it was fantastic.
- Cook: A little light, but cooked through with not much gumminess.
What would make it better
A little more cook, which Joe called a personal preference and his only small critique.
The verdict
Jay went with a flat 9.0. Joe was flirting with the nines too and gave Mattina's an 8.9. A classic Buffalo pizza that, as Jay put it, is probably one of the best in town on any given day.
