Marble & Rye Review – Buffalo, NY
score
Joe wanted to try Marble & Rye on Genesee Street forever, but it opens at 5 and it was always too dark to film. He finally made it for their Detroit style pizza.
The order
Joe ordered the Detroit style cheese pepperoni for $21.75. It's a four slicer with charred up pepperoni, sauce on top and what looks like a little parm.
First bite
Joe called it the best pizza of the day, and this was his 11th slice. It's a thick crust, but it's floofy, with some crunch. He went for a corner piece, like he always does.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Thick but floofy, with crunch. Joe says Detroit style takes a more complicated proofing process, so people doing it usually know what they're doing.
- Sauce: Beautiful. Nice and tomatoey.
- Cheese: That cheese crown is money.
- Pepperoni: Charred up. Joe says it's not burnt.
What would make it better
It's a cheese pepperoni, but maybe a little basil.
The chana masala pizza
Joe came back for a Detroit style chana masala pizza at $27.19. It has a chickpea gravy, a jalapeno sauce, creme fraiche, spices, aromatics and a cheese blend. They make their sauces in house, and Joe could taste that homemade style. His favorite part was the chickpeas with the gravy, with just a touch of mild spice. The crust is unreal and cooked very well. Out of all the Indian pizzas he's had, this ranks among the highest, though he still prefers the more familiar cheese pepperoni.
The verdict
The guy inside recognized Joe and loves his videos, and Joe was worried he wouldn't like it. He loved it. At five bucks a slice it's worth every penny, and he gave it a 9.1. A passerby he shared it with gave it a 9.
Ranking note: Best Pizza Buffalo ranks every pizzeria by Joe’s score for a standard pizza, so Marble & Rye is listed at 9.1.
