If you ask Pizza Review Joe where to get a true Buffalo-style pizza, this is one of the first places he’ll name. Macy’s Place Pizzeria on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore scores a 9.3, good for #2 out of 236 pizzerias on the Best Pizza Buffalo rankings, and after one bite on camera it’s easy to see why.

The order

Joe ordered his usual: a large cheese pepperoni pizza, which came to $23.84. He didn’t even have to ask for cup and char pepperoni. Macy’s puts it on by default, and there was plenty of it, spread evenly across the whole pie.

First bite

The pizza came out piping hot, hot enough that Joe lost a little cheese on the first pull. In his words, if this doesn’t scream Buffalo, he doesn’t know what does. It’s a saucy, generously topped, “sloppy jalopy” kind of pie. Not something you want to eat while driving, but perfect standing on the sidewalk outside the shop.

Crust, sauce, cheese and pepperoni

  • Pepperoni: Joe called it his favorite cup and char pepperoni, with plenty of spice and those crispy, curled edges Buffalo is known for.
  • Sauce: Sweet, but not overly sweet, and there’s a lot of it.
  • Cheese: “Unreal.” Creamy, rich and the kind of Buffalo cheese pull Joe says you can’t find on his side of the border.
  • Crust: A nice crunch underneath and light and fluffy on top. The back crust is worth finishing.

What sets Macy’s apart is how everything works together. Joe could taste every part of it at once: the parmesan, the cheese, the sauce and the crust.

Going back for a slice

Joe returned to the Kenmore shop later with Anthony from Eat Local New York and grabbed cheese pepperoni slices for $3.81 each. Each one is a thick, heavy slice with a sweet sauce and a nice crunch on the bottom, and at under four dollars it’s one of the best lunch deals in town. Joe scored the slice an 8.4. Anthony, used to Syracuse-style pizza, was tougher on it, but both agreed it’s a good, solid pie.

The verdict

Macy’s Place in Kenmore is the benchmark for Buffalo-style pizza: thick but crispy, saucy, cheesy and loaded with spicy cup and char. If you only try one pizzeria from this list, make it this one. Macy’s also has a location on Genesee Street in Cheektowaga, which Joe reviewed separately.
