Jay's Artisan Pizzeria Review – Kenmore, NY
score
Jay's Artisan Pizzeria is on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore. It makes two styles of pizza, wood fired and Detroit style, and Joe came back on back-to-back days to try both.
The order
First up was the wood-fired cheese pepperoni for $18.45. It had nice leoparding on the outside and darkening underneath.
First bite
The sauce isn't typical Buffalo. It's not sweet, it's nice and tomatoey, and it was Joe's favorite part right away.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Good, solid and full of flavor with some nice charring. For a wood-fired pie, Joe found the outer crust a little thick.
- Sauce: You can taste the tomatoes. Joe wondered if there's olive oil in there.
- Cheese: Nice, and it complements the wood-fired style well.
- Pepperoni: Ultra thin cut. Joe called that a smart move for a pizza that cooks in about 90 seconds.
What would make it better
A thinner outer crust. Joe said lots of people love it this way, but he likes it thinner on a wood-fired pie.
Going back for the Detroit style
The next day Joe returned for the Detroit style, a four-slicer for $17.95. This one was the red top, with sauce on top, a little Parmesan and some garlic Joe could smell right away. It had a golden crust cooked to perfection, a crunchy cheese crown on the outside and cup and char pepperoni. Joe liked it even more than the wood fired. He wondered if the garlic pulls away from the sauce, but decided it complements the pie well. He called it a solid nine pizza.
The verdict
Jay's serves up Joe's two favorite styles and does both well. The wood-fired pie earned a solid 8.5, and the Detroit style jumped to a 9.2.
Ranking note: Best Pizza Buffalo ranks every pizzeria by Joe’s score for a standard pizza, so Jay's Artisan Pizzeria is listed at 8.5.
