Buffalo Deep Dish Review – Buffalo, NY
score
Buffalo Deep Dish is inside Buffalo Brewing Co. on Myrtle Avenue. Joe had been talking with Matt, the owner, for a while and following the pizzas on Instagram, waiting for this place to open.
The order
Joe ordered a large Detroit style pizza for $17.75. It's a six-slice pie, not shy on the pepperoni, with sauce on top and a crown of cheese around the edge.
First bite
Nice browning and an all-around crunch. Joe went straight for the corner slice and called it crunchalicious.
Crust, sauce, cheese and toppings
- Crust: Fantastic. Joe loves the crunch.
- Sauce: Nice, and it works great on top with that crunch.
- Cheese: The cheese around the edge is a work of art.
What would make it better
Bigger. Joe wanted more of it, though he could easily crush one on his own.
Chicago tavern style
Joe came back for a 14-inch Chicago tavern style cheese pepperoni for $18 flat. It's super thin, light, airy and crispy, with a tavern cut, well distributed cup and char and nice seasoning. The sauce is just a little sweet. It's good and would go great with craft beers, but Joe likes more dough so he can load up on sauce and toppings. He still prefers the Detroit.
Sausage and pepper tavern pizza
Next was a 14-inch tavern style specialty with sausage and a hot pepper mix, which they recommended, for $20 flat. Joe said this is right up his alley, with some acidity, a little spice and olives. The sausage is the real deal, and Joe figures it comes from a butcher. The only thing holding it back from a 9 is that it's not a Detroit style. He called it one of the best specialty pizzas he'd had.
Chicago deep dish cheese pepperoni
Then a 12-inch Chicago deep dish cheese pepperoni for $24 flat. They asked if he wanted cup and char on top. It has a ton of cheese, more than any Buffalo pizza Joe has had, with a tomatoey sauce on top and parmesan for extra salt. The back bites are money. Joe would still go with the Detroit style, but this one is pretty solid.
Chicago deep dish specialty
Last was a 12-inch Chicago style specialty for $31.36 with cheese, sausage, Calabrian chilies, banana peppers, ricotta and basil. Joe liked the kick of the spice, the fresh basil and the tang from the peppers, and he called the ingredients money. But it's a pizza marathon, and he hit his cheese limit before he even got to the ricotta. He'd love to try it again with less ricotta.
The verdict
Detroit style done right is phenomenal, and Joe said it did not disappoint after waiting so long. He gave it a 9.1 and called it a work of art. Of everything he tried here, the Detroit style is still his favorite.
Ranking note: Best Pizza Buffalo ranks every pizzeria by Joe’s score for a standard pizza, so Buffalo Deep Dish is listed at 9.1.
